Get to know a local Thai family as guests in their home on this half-day excursion.
Thailand is known as the land of smiles for good reason as the locals have a well-earned reputation for their warm and welcoming hospitality. Experience this first hand by visiting a family home to the south of Chiang Mai’s old city in the district of Hang Dong.
We’ll visit a traditional Lanna family residence, this home has been a part of their heritage for more than 150 years. Their house and rice barn are typical examples of the northern Thai style.
As friendly, knowledgeable, and charismatic hosts, they’ll welcome guests into their life and invite any questions you may have, so embrace this opportunity to learn about the Lanna way of life.
The main activity for the day is a cooking extravaganza. We’ll explore the local plot to select ingredients for the feast – the family lives a farm-to-table existence with almost all they need on-site, including fresh herbs and spices and various fruits including mangoes and bananas. They’ll explain the different growing and farming processes for each plant.
Then, it’s on to the culinary masterclass as we create local northern Thai dishes from secret homemade recipes. Guests really benefit from this local expertise to get a real insight into Thai northern cuisine, a far cry from other overly commercialised classes. The host, however, is aware of foreign tastes, and can scale down the spice level accordingly! The highlight, of course, is sitting down to enjoy the home cooked feast as newfound friends. Leave the hosts with new culinary skills and hopefully a valuable insight into the local Lanna way of life.
