This private-access experience unveils the intricate art of crafting Khon Mask ornaments through an exclusive gallery visit and hands-on workshop in a local artist’s community in Chiang Mai province.
The community itself is located to the East of the city of Chiang Mai, set within idyllic, lush countryside.
Thailand’s traditional dance-drama performers wear khon masks as part of their attire. Another name for the dance-drama is “Khon.” A Khon performance includes music, acting, dancing, singing, and acrobatics. The Ramakien, a Thai adaptation of an Indian epic, serves as the sole source for the stories in the theatre.
The masks are beautifully crafted, decorated and gilded papier mache masks that cover the whole head of performers playing demon characters.
As part of this workshop, guests will view an exquisite gallery of miniaturised, ornamental khon masks for inspiration before being guided through every step of making their own. Through the workshop, the group will explore the meaning behind much of the imagery and will discuss the importance of khon masks to Thai culture. At the end of the workshop, guests can take home their wonderful creations.
