Depart the hotel at 8am for a short drive to Ban Khaey village, located on the outskirts of Sukhothai. Today’s cycling adventure travels from the countryside to Sukhothai Historical Park, offering a glimpse into the life and legend of this small town. First, pedal along dirt paths passing rice paddies and admiring the views of the Kau Laung mountains.
After half an hour of riding, Sukhothai’s southern gate comes into view and we go onwards to explore the historical park. Sukhothai was the ancient capital of Thailand, before it was replaced by Ayutthaya and Bangkok. This former capital is important in Thai history as it is regarded the birthplace of the country. It was during this this period when Thailand freed itself from the Khmer Kingdom.
While wandering the park, learn about the town’s history, culture and architecture – there are nearly 200 ruins to explore. Visit some of the park’s most photogenic sites like Wat Mahathat and Wat Sa Si temple. Also, stop at Wat Traphang Thong, the only active temple in the park.
Afterwards, be rewarded with a local lunch before setting off on a final ride along the town’s irrigation canals, passing quaint local villages.
Depart around 4pm to return to your hotel.
